Landfill gas is increasingly being recognised as an important component of Africa’s broader renewable gas and circular economy landscape, offering opportunities to reduce methane emissions while generating dispatchable renewable energy from existing waste streams. This session will explore the role of landfill gas projects within wider waste-to-energy strategies, examining both the technical and commercial realities of capturing, upgrading and utilising landfill-derived methane in industrial and municipal contexts. The discussion will also consider how landfill gas systems can interact with and complement anaerobic digestion and biogas infrastructure to create more integrated and flexible renewable gas ecosystems.

Drawing on operational project experience, Energidrop will present insights from the Robinson Deep landfill project, exploring the interaction between landfill gas and AD biogas systems, including opportunities for heat integration and hybrid renewable gas approaches. Alongside this, Energy Systems will provide a broader overview of landfill gas project development and implementation, sharing practical lessons from operational sites and discussing the evolving role of landfill gas within South Africa’s energy transition and waste management landscape. Contributing the landfill owner and operator perspective, EnviroServ will provide insight into how landfill gas recovery integrates within broader waste management, environmental compliance and circular economy strategies.

Delegates can expect to gain a clearer understanding of the technical, environmental and commercial considerations involved in landfill gas recovery, as well as the opportunities for integrating landfill gas into wider decarbonisation and circular economy strategies.

Non-recyclable waste streams remain a growing challenge across many African municipalities and industries, particularly where landfill capacity, waste segregation and recycling infrastructure are limited. This session explores the role of thermal conversion technologies in recovering energy from residual waste streams that cannot be economically or technically recycled, while examining the place of energy-from-waste within broader circular economy and decarbonisation strategies.

Bringing together international expertise and practical experience, ESWET (the European Suppliers of energy-from-waste Technologies Association) will examine how energy-from-waste can complement recycling and material recovery within a circular economy framework. Vyncke and other industry contributors will share insights from real-world projects involving RDF production, industrial combustion systems and emissions control technologies. Yellow Tree Environmental will provide perspectives on air quality, emissions compliance, greenhouse gas accounting, carbon tax considerations and the broader environmental requirements associated with energy-from-waste projects.

Delegates will gain a balanced understanding of the technical, environmental and regulatory considerations surrounding energy-from-waste systems, and the role they may play in sustainable waste management and energy recovery strategies across Africa.
