Bio360 Africa 2026 - putting bioenergy on the map

Paul StuartWe are very excited to announce the launch of Bio360 Africa !! The first edition will be staged in South Africa, 17-18 June 2026 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg. The event will comprise a two day event hosting conferences, an exhibition and study tours putting the limelight on the African bioenergy scene (solid, liquid and gaseous) and equally biochar, biomaterials and carbon capture utilisation and storage.

Africa’s potential to produce sustainable bioenergy from a broad range of local biomass resources is vast and well known. Bio360 Africa aims to be a catalyser for Bioenergy to put its stamp firmly on the African energy map.

After two decades of event organisation focused on accelerating the Biotransition in Europe, we have arrived today at a place where our ambition is now to enlargen our role by acting as a catalyser, where we can, to accelerate the Biotransition also in other regions of the world. Based on our hard-earned credentials, a decades long accrued sectoral knowledge coupled with a recognised international renown for our flagship event, Bio360 in Nantes - France, we have a firm footing on which to build and from which to make a bigger, bioenergy-impact still.

Impact being the operative word, our overarching motivator being what happens after the event. The single most important determinant of success of an event, as we see it, is what happens in its wake, once everyone has packed up and gone home again. The new projects that emerge, the new partnerships that are formed, the new insights that are gained that lead to new and game changing innovations, the gaining of a fuller understanding of technical and market issues that lead to better decision making and feed into tailored policy making. And more.

This First of Kind event in Africa arrives in close collaboration with our main local partner, SABIA, the Southern African Biogas Industry Association. As the weeks and months advance, Bio360 Africa will welcome into its fold more sectoral, multi-lateral, institutional and media partners from across our international network to make this inaugural edition of Bio360 Africa already a real platform to boost the uptake of bioenergy and the bioeconomy across the African continent.

We are very excited about this new adventure … may it be to the benefit of all !

See you in Johannesburg !

South Africa to host the first edition of Bio360 Africa

Gordon AyresIn 2022, renewable energy made up 7% of South Africa’s final energy consumption, around half of that through biomass. While coal remains the dominant source of power and heat, there are numerous and significant opportunities to expand bioenergy within the national energy mix.
New initiatives recently launched in the South Africa include sustainable and industrial scale production of pellets as well as biochar and liquid biofuels for shipping are also under evaluation.
As signatory to the Paris Accord, South Africa must reduce organic waste to landfill by 2030. Municipalities and other stakeholders have started to allocate real budgets towards this challenge and bioenergy is standing head and shoulders above any other solution being presented presently. The cost of energy is constantly increasing and South Africa has a large and dynamic youth who are engaged and looking for opportunities to grow and progress.

Biogas in South Africa is the most developed branch of the bioenergy family and the Southern African Biogas Industry Association (SABIA) is the main local partner of Bio360 Africa.
The need for biogas technology is high with high interest from large scale consumers and waste generators, as well as municipalities, and other parties. The interesting mix of market in the country with commercial scale food producers and small-scale farmers creates a mixed market place with potential business at all scales.
SABIA is a grass-roots association started in 2013 by interested individuals and companies to support and grow biogas in Southern Africa. Initially supported by IDC with a board of volunteers the association is legally registered as a non-profit. With onward support from its members and UNIDO, the association has grown and is involved in the following sectors:
• Legislation and regulation of biogas in Southern Africa
• Development and training of biogas practitioners
• R&D around biogas, energy crops, slurry usage and other
• Project  alignment assistance,   Development of guidelines and technical documents
• Raising Public Awarenes and hosting of biogas shows and technical conferences

With over a decade of experience, SABIA possesses in-depth knowledge of the local regulatory and institutional environment and maintains strong ties with donor agencies, financiers and the private sector. While biogas remains its technical focus, SABIA is the ideal main local partner for this « first of kind » event, supporting not only biogas initiatives but also the broader, cross-cutting bioenergy themes.
